The holiday season is upon us, and with that office holiday parties are on many employers’ – and employees’- minds. Office holiday parties can be a great way to boost morale, improve comradery, celebrate the year’s achievements, and improve employee retention. But with the cost of everyday goods and services increasing, coupled with inflation, companies need to consider if the holiday celebration is helpful or harmful.
Companies must be mindful that if they are hosting a holiday celebration, it should not come on the tail or right before job cuts. Ask any employee, they would rather have a job than a fancy soiree.
Some companies may be in a position where they can have a celebration but want to conserve resources as they do. Some options for companies to consider:
- Conference Room or Break Room Anyone? Rather than reserving restaurant space, save costs with an onsite party.
- WIN shout outs: End the year on a positive note, by celebrating employee accomplishments. Announce big wins, promotions, and other markers of growth and positive performance.
- Potluck: Instead of having the gathering catered, have employees volunteer to bring their favorite dish. Create a sign-up list and let the employees create a unique feast that reflects a wide array of traditions and expressions. This is a great team builder as it allows employees to learn more about one another – what is the most popular dish among the group, who is the next Top Chef, who is the most adventurous/creative baker?
- Cookie Exchange/ Cookie Contest: Don’t forget about dessert! Similar to a potluck, a cookie exchange can help you to learn more about your employees - Who loves baking in their free time? Who discovered the best local sweet shop selling the tastiest treats? Who has a delicious secret family recipe? Encourage employees to bake or bring a dozen cookies and swap with fellow employees. Along with this, you may also wish to hold a cookie contest, with different categories- best overall, most original, sweetest, saltiest? Trophy to the winner!
- Hot Chocolate Bar: A make your own hot chocolate bar encourages movement and interaction between employees. Offer white and milk chocolate hot cocoa; and a wide variety of toppings - whipped cream, sprinkles, candy canes, marshmallows – the works! Have non-chocolate drinks like tea available too.
- Free Entertainment: Stream holiday music online, create a cozy atmosphere with a fireplace screensaver, design a custom Jeopardy-style trivia game with questions about your company or industry.
Office holiday parties don’t have to break the bank to be memorable. With a little creativity and thoughtful planning, employers can host celebrations that foster camaraderie, recognize achievements, and spread holiday cheer—all while staying mindful of budgets. From potlucks and cookie exchanges to fun contests and free entertainment, these simple yet festive ideas prove that the true spirit of the season lies in connection, not cost. By focusing on togetherness, companies can ensure their holiday gatherings leave employees feeling valued, appreciated, and excited for the year ahead.
