Most employers are familiar with the ordinary overtime regulations under the FLSA — that is if an employee works more than 40 hours in a week, they get paid time-and-a-half. The 8/80 rule is a rare exception for calculating overtime and is available only to employers who operate a hospital or residential care establishment.
The 8/80 method is useful because it allows for more flexibility in scheduling.
