Evolving Accommodations for Employees Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing

Emerging technologies are creating new possibilities for supporting employees who are deaf or hard of hearing, particularly through tools such as real-time captioning and AI-assisted technology.

Shireen Meshkati, Esq, Assistant General Counsel and Human Resources Consultant at Engage PEO, recently spoke with SHRM about how employers can evaluate these tools and involve employees throughout the accommodation process.

Today’s speech-to-text technology can provide live captioning during meetings and conferences, but employers should take the time to test these solutions with employees to ensure they are accurate and capturing the information needed.

Shireen also recommends checking in with employees after an accommodation has been implemented. Asking whether employees feel more included, meetings are easier to follow, and communication has improved can help employers determine whether the technology is effectively meeting their needs.
